October, 2018

Dear Rotarians,

Thirty years ago, 1,000 children were paralyzed by polio every single day.  A staggering number.  This year we’ve had only 12 new polio cases reported.  Another staggering number.   We have much to celebrate.  Our progress toward ending polio has been remarkable.  But there is still work to do before we reach eradication.

That’s what World Polio Day is all about.  On October 24 Rotary wants the world to know the end of polio is in sight.  Every club in the world is asked to mark this special day by doing something special to raise awareness and funds to end polio now.  Please take advantage of this tremendous opportunity to highlight Rotary, and our historic work to eradicate polio, in your club’s community.  I know some of you have events already planned and we thank you.  If you need ideas, see the information below from Rotary International. I also invite you to contact Amy Weber, our PolioPlus Committee Chair, as she is ready to help you.  You may reach her at amyweber54@gmail.com

With your help, we will see the end of polio in our lifetime.  Rotary will be in the history books.  We will not only get to see it happen, we will make it happen!

Yours in Rotary,

Don Meyer

Join the Celebration

World Polio Day is 24 October!

Now’s the time to start planning your World Polio Day event. Spread the word in your community about the ongoing fight to end polio. Together, we can — and will — make history by ending polio for good.

You can join our global celebration in many ways:
  • Hold a fundraiser. Consider making virtual reality a part of it so people can see what it’s like to vaccinate a child against polio.
  • Educate your neighbors. Talk with friends, family, and colleagues about Rotary’s work to end polio.
  • Hold a viewing party. Watch the livestream of Rotary’s World Polio Day event as a club or with another Rotary or Rotaract club.
  • Light up your city. Illuminate a local landmark with the End Polio Now logo.

No event is too big or too small. Whatever you’re planning for World Polio Day, be sure to tell us about it.

Find resources to help you plan or promote your event at endpolio.org.

Remember November!  It’s Foundation Month

It’s not too early to be planning for Foundation Month in November.  It’s a great time to launch a fundraising campaign in your club to help meet your Annual Fund goal and your PolioPlus goal.   We have a number of folks on our District Foundation Committee who are willing to visit your club and promote the Rotary Foundation.  Just let Don Meyer know if you’d like to have a speaker and I will arrange for someone to be there.

We also have a fundraising plan for you to use which is an effective tool that can help you increase your club’s giving to the Foundation.  Again, please contact Don Meyer at foundationchair@district5970.org or at 641-251-4655 for more information.

Happy Fundraising!
