Thinking about becoming an exchange student?
 
That’s awesome! We love your adventurous spirit. Before you dive in, here is the lowdown on what being a Rotary Youth Exchange student is all about:
 
  • You’ll be an ambassador for Rotary! It’s a big job and can be tough at times, but it is seriously one of the most rewarding things you’ll ever do.
 
  • You need a local Rotary Club. Make sure to chat with your local club before you apply because they have to sponsor you. You can find your local club in the District 5970 directory right here: https://district5970.org/ClubDirectory.
 
  • District 5970 covers most of northern Iowa and we are experts at helping students go abroad and welcoming them here.
 
  • Our program is run by amazing volunteers. This keeps costs down for you, so just remember to show them some love for all their hard work!
 
  • It’s a 1:1 trade! For every student we send out, we bring one in. Your family doesn't have to host, but we do need your help finding great host families locally.
 
  • Your safety is our top priority. Because of that, you’ll need to attend all our trainings and successfully complete Rotary Youth Leadership Awards (RYLA), a week-long leadership conference at the end of July.
 
  • We take your privacy seriously. Your info only goes to the people who need it to help your exchange happen—like Rotary International and your host families.
 
  • We have partners all over the world. While you might not get your absolute #1 country choice, we’ll make sure you’re matched with a place that will give you the best experience possible.
